A wheelbarrow is great until the load gets heavy and starts tipping. The BILT HARD four cubic foot poly dump cart (model GCB-1101) takes a different approach: four wheels, a plastic bed and a handle you pull behind you. Here’s what it does well, what the load ratings really mean (including the dumping limit the listing doesn’t mention), and how to use it safely around the homestead.

The Cart at a Glance

  • Model: BILT HARD GCB-1101 poly yard dump cart
  • Bed: 4 cubic feet, poly plastic, 36.5 x 20 in
  • Load rating: 600 lb overall; 300 lb maximum when dumping (owner’s manual); both assume an evenly distributed load
  • Tires: four 10-inch no-flat (solid) tires
  • Handle: swivels 180°, padded grip
  • Unloading: quick-release dump; tip the bed to unload
  • Frame: steel
  • Size / weight: 40.9 x 22.4 x 41.3 in; about 32–33 lb
  • Assembly: required

A Dump Cart, Not a Wheelbarrow

It often shows up next to wheelbarrows, but this is a four-wheeled garden cart. You pull it behind you instead of balancing the load on one wheel, which is easier on your back with heavy loads on level ground. The trade-off is that it’s wider than a wheelbarrow, needs more room to turn, and won’t squeeze down very narrow garden paths.

Poly Bed and No-Flat Tires

The 36.5 x 20 inch bed is poly plastic, so the bed itself won’t rust and it hoses out easily after hauling compost or manure. It rides on four 10-inch no-flat tires: there’s nothing to pump up, and thorns, nails and fence staples won’t leave you with a flat.

Swivel Handle and Quick-Release Dump

The handle swivels 180 degrees and has a padded grip, so you can steer and pull from different angles. A quick-release lets you tip the bed forward to dump your load where you want it.

Load Limits: 600 lb Hauling, 300 lb Dumping

BILT HARD rates the cart for up to 600 pounds. The GCB-1101 owner’s manual adds an important detail: the maximum dumping load is 300 pounds, half the overall rating, and both ratings assume the load is evenly distributed across the tray. In practice:

  • Spread heavy material like rock, soil or wet compost evenly across the bed.
  • Don’t stack items on the top edges of the tray.
  • If the load is over about 300 lb, unload some by hand before using the quick-release dump.

Safe Use (From the Manual)

  • Don’t exceed 5 mph. It’s built for yard, garden and barn use, not highways.
  • No passengers. The cart is not a toy; don’t let children use it unsupervised.
  • Inspect it before each use, and don’t use it with damaged or missing parts until you have replacements.
  • Assembly is required. The tray brackets, axles, wheels and handle bolt together. The manual has you adjust the front-axle nut for smooth steering.

Honest Limitations

  • Solid tires ride rough. No-flat tires give a firmer, bumpier, noisier ride than air-filled tires over rocks and ruts.
  • The frame can rust. The poly bed won’t, but the steel frame can if the cart lives outside. Store it under cover.
  • The dumping limit is lower than the headline number (300 lb vs 600 lb).
  • No towing claim. This model is sold as a hand-pulled cart; we’re not covering it as a tow-behind trailer.
  • Warranty: the retail listing and the manufacturer’s site describe coverage differently, so check the current terms with the seller before you buy.

Who It’s For

Homesteaders and gardeners who move a lot of soil, mulch, compost, feed and firewood over fairly level ground, and who are tired of patching wheelbarrow tires. It’s a good fit for garden beds, compost runs, moving rock within the load limits, and bringing in firewood for the stove.

The Bottom Line

The BILT HARD GCB-1101 is a simple, practical hauler for everyday yard work. The poly bed and no-flat tires make it low-maintenance, as long as you respect its load limits (600 lb rolling, 300 lb when dumping), keep it slow, and store it out of the weather.
